Karate Fact #1
Karategi is the Japanese word for a traditional karate uniform. The first karate uniform was designed based off of Judo uniforms and was first worn by Gichin Funakoshi when he demonstrated Karate at the Kodokan in Japan.
Karate Fact #2
Jigoro Kan, the founder of Judo, is credited with creating the first belt ranking system. He only used white and black belts. It was no until the early 1900’s that the colored belt system of awarding rank was created. Many modern martial artists, however, mistakenly believe that the belt ranking system is an ancient aspect of traditional martial arts.
Karate Fact #3
Samurai warriors typically carried two swords. A long sword known as a katana and a shorter swored called a wakizashi. The wakizashi was used for, close combat and seppuku, a form of ritual suicide. In fact, seppuku was a right reserved for samurai in order to preserve their honor by taking their own life should the need arise.
